Psychogenealogy or transgenerational psychology
Psychogenealogy deals with and faces the “emotional invisible bindings” that link us to our ancestors, compelling us to make our life the incarnation of a transgenerational myth. Like actors on the scene of life, we play roles that allow us to keep the emotions and the destiny of our ancestors alive and active, driven by “unconscious obligations of Love”.
Family constellations
From Watzslawik, Beavin, Bateson, Jackson, and other scholars of the Palo Alto’s school comes the idea of seeing family as a “System” and to apply the general systemic theory to family relationships. In this perspective family is seen as a system, an entity having its own characteristics, rules and standards.
So who are in fact the members of a family that actually play in the relationships? Through transgenerational psychology we realize that ancestors influence the reactions and behaviours of the following generations.
The Genogram, a tool to draw a family tree, brought into transgenerational psychology by Bowen and extended by Doris and Lise Langlois, two psychotherapists sisters who work at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, is a very useful instrument for family constellations.
Anne Ancelin Schützenberger, the psychoanalyst author of “The Ancestor Syndrome” repeatedly mentions the cult of ancestors in animist cultures. Anthropology and animism are really important also in the imaginal approach that nonterpia uses in psychogenealogy and family constellations.
The course uses tools such as genogram and psychodrama and other instruments that Selene Calloni Williams and Paola Bertoldi, have reported from their research in animist tribes.
Moreover Paola Bertoldi, expert in complex systems, will explain how to see the family system in the new perspective of complexity.
The Imaginal Perspective
The imaginal movement, starting in the West with Analytical Psychology (Jung) and continuing with Archetypal Psychology (Hillman), inspires the symbolic-imaginal method of nonterapia.
In the imaginal paradigm, our body and the whole world are within the psyche. This concept is common to all the philosophical traditions that consider reality as a “psychic imagination” and psyche as an “imaginal force”. To say that things are not objective does not mean that the object is not real: the understanding of the synergy of opposites is the basis for the imaginal feeling to the real. The approach whereby we produce reality does not deny the objectivity of things, as well as the deep happiness of the wise man does not prevent him from feeling sad.
The symbolic-imaginal movement draws on Eastern and Western immaginal psychologies and philosophies. The effectiveness of symbolic-imaginal paradigm stands in its ability to encourage an “active perception” of the events. “We are the masters of the things, not the victims of their reactions“, says, Sri Aurobindo, one of the maximum modern philosophers of India.
Through the application of symbolic-imaginal method one can recognize reality as an emanation of his own psyche and find within himself the energy to act on his emanation in a positive and constructive way. With these premises, the symbolic-imaginal method is able to deeply influence the processes of communication, and of personal and professional growth. The symbolic-imaginal method, by considering the psyche the real source of the flow of reality, is able to stimulate creativity and innovation. The practices of the the symbolic-imaginal method bring, as a consequence of the imaginal vision inspiring them, a great reduction of unconscious fear, that is known to be the main brake inhibitor of decision-making capacity and the keener emotional objection to success.
Founder of the method is Selene Calloni Williams, who drew it up from all the experiences gained in the East and West. Today the symbolic-imaginal method is exclusive to the schools managed by nonterapia and to the training courses offered by Corporate Nontherapy, that include the most effective western paradigms of counseling and coaching, the millenary eastern philosophies and the new models of the global economy.
Contents
What are psychogenealogy and family constellations based on the imaginal approach?
They are an application of the symbolic-imaginal method to transgenerational psychology, which analyses our family history to reveal the “emotional invisible bindings” that link us to our ancestors, compelling us to make our life the incarnation of a transgenerational myth. Like actors on the scene of life, we play roles that allow us to keep the emotions and the destiny of our ancestors alive and active, driven by “unconscious obligations of Love”.
What are we going to do during the course?
The course studies the relationship between family history and personal history to discover which family codes and rules influence our choices, which “invisible loyalties” bound us. Through the psychodrama, we put on the scene the emotions that are the basis of our family code, so that we can transform the energy contained in them and make it a resource for our life.
What can I use it for?
It can solve the main problems of your psychological life and give you effective tools for your profession.
What will I learn?
Here are the main themes studied during the course:
• Principles of psychogenealogy, trangenerational psychology and and family constellations,
• Genogram drawing and elaboration,
• Symbolic-imaginal method,
• How to conduct a meditation on family history
• How to manage a psychodrama session,
• How to lead debriefing at the end of each session.
